À Mildmay, dans le nord de Londres, une maison victorienne a trouvé un nouveau souffle. Deux ans de travaux, menés pièce par pièce par Nathaniel, cofondateur du cabinet d'architecture Mosley Thorold, pour lui et sa famille ont donné naissance à une maison où la rénovation chaleureuse et intelligente a tout changé. Si la maison semblait à l'achat mal organisée, un professionnel comme Nathaniel a su en déceler le potentiel immédiatement. Escaliers mal placés, circulation hasardeuse,  l’intérieur manquait de fluidité. Plutôt que de subir, il a choisi d’orchestrer une rénovation millimétrée, à la fois architecturale et familiale.

Première étape décisive : déplacer l’escalier. Cette intervention a libéré l’espace et reconnecté les trois niveaux de la maison. La lumière qui provient des lucarnes, redessine les volumes. Les combles ont été aménagés et  l’espace a été métamorphosé en chambre, salle de jeux, salle de bains et on trouve même désormais une terrasse sur le toit. Côté matériaux, Nathaniel a privilégié une palette durable et chaleureuse : sols et rangements en frêne, cuisine conçue en linoléum de cacao, surfaces texturées et détails sur mesure. Le tout donne une atmosphère à la fois contemporaine et ancrée dans l’histoire, où les enfants jouent pendant que leur maman, violoncelliste, répète ses morceaux. Après cette rénovation chaleureuse et intelligente, réalisée en grande partie après l’emménagement, cette maison possède une âme unique, vintage et très anglaise n'est-ce pas? The warm and intelligent renovation of a Victorian house in London

In Mildmay, north London, a Victorian house has been given a new lease of life. Two years of work, carried out room by room by Nathaniel, co-founder of the architectural firm Mosley Thorold, for him and his family have given rise to a house where warm and intelligent renovation has changed everything. If the house seemed poorly organised at the time of purchase, a professional like Nathaniel was able to immediately see its potential. Poorly placed stairs, awkward circulation, the interior lacked fluidity. Rather than endure, he chose to orchestrate a meticulously planned renovation, both architectural and familial.

First decisive step: move the staircase. This intervention freed up space and reconnected the three levels of the house. The light coming from the dormers reshapes the volumes. The attic has been converted and the space has been transformed into a bedroom, playroom, bathroom, and even a rooftop terrace. On the materials side, Nathaniel favoured a durable and warm palette: ash floors and storage, a kitchen designed in cocoa linoleum, textured surfaces, and custom details. The whole thing gives off an atmosphere that is both contemporary and rooted in history, where the children play while their mother, a cellist, rehearses her pieces.
