A 59sqm century-old two-room apartment with original stucco work
Original stucco, hand-blown windows, Carrara marble and parquet flooring in this century-old, timeless two-room apartment of 59sqm
This 59sqm, century-old two-room apartment has been in the same family for the past 42 years. The building dates back to 1912. It belongs to the Swedish Romantic style, an architectural movement that combines the robustness of Nordic materials with intricate ornamentation. Stucco runs along the ceilings, original medallions are still there and no renovation has erased them.
The living room faces west and is bright from the early afternoon hours. Its windows feature original mouth-blown glass panes, with that antique glass that filters the light differently at every hour. The cast-iron radiator takes pride of place in the corner. It heats the room, of course, but it also serves as a decorative feature. As for the interior design, we love the warm-colored walls. They’ve been painted with a coat of Jotun’s “Peachy,” a pinkish-brown shade that highlights the white moldings.
The corner pantry, the custom cabinets, the pine paneling, it’s all there. This kitchen hasn’t been “modernized.” It has retained its early 20th-century Swedish character, with its straight lines and natural materials.
The bedroom opens onto both the entryway and the kitchen. This layout allows for a fluid flow that makes daily life easier. In this room, the walls were painted with Jotun “Savann,” a warm sand shade that highlights the white woodwork. The result is elegant and soothing. It overlooks the courtyard at the back of the building, offering a haven of calm in the heart of the city.
The story is worth telling. One of the former owner had a contact in Carrara, in northern Tuscany. He obtained a batch of marble directly from the source. The bathroom’s floors and walls are entirely clad in it. This veined white marble, carefully installed, gives this small room an almost luxurious feel.
