On the East Sussex coast, this white seaside home overlooks the English Channel from the heights of Fairlight Cove. This coastal village is nestled close to Hastings, in the heart of a landscape of cliffs and valleys. Its owners have created a light-filled interior where tranquility reigns in every room. A palette of nuanced whites adorns the walls, floors, and furnishings.

Linen, antique earthenware, and bouquets of hydrangeas lend a soft, English cottage charm. With a floor area of approximately 110 square meters, the house features a living room, an open kitchen, an office, and two bedrooms. A landscaped garden extends the home’s decorative theme with its flowering perennials and views of the sea.

The white-panelled living room

The living room occupies the heart of the home, in a spacious, open-concept area connected to the kitchen. Vertical white-painted paneling adorns the walls. Parquet flooring, also painted white, accentuates the sense of space and brightness. French doors open onto the garden on either side of the room, which enjoys dual exposure. Long white sheers filter the sunlight and let in the sea breeze. This enveloping whiteness creates the perfect backdrop for colorful accents. A Kantha throw made in India, featuring floral and zigzag patterns, adds warmth to the back of a sofa.

Two sofas upholstered in ecru linen face each other around a white coffee table. The cushions, made from vintage canvas, feature fine blue or red stripes. They are reminiscent of the old grain sacks that can still sometimes be found at flea markets.

Built-in bookshelves hold books, vases, and painted earthenware plates. Blue hydrangeas, arranged in white pitchers, echo the touches of blue in the textiles.

The white kitchen opening onto the garden

The kitchen flows seamlessly into the living room, beneath large gray enamel pendant lights. Its white cabinet fronts have a simple, timeless style. The walls feature white paneling and the same painted hardwood floors. Open shelves provide a place to display tableware. A French door opens onto the backyard and its wooden decks. This is where you can sit to enjoy your morning coffee while looking out at the sea. This direct connection to the outdoors makes the kitchen particularly inviting.

A large, weathered farmhouse table takes center stage in the room. Its bleached wooden top rests on gray-painted legs, beautifully worn by time. In the back, rows of glass jars line the spacious pantry. This open storage area is almost a decorative feature in its own right.

A study two steps down

Just past the living room, two steps lead down to a charming study lined with books and picture frames. This room has its own door leading to the garden. Here, a soft green hue takes center stage on the desk and the small chest of drawers. A wicker chair with a floral cushion faces the window. An antique trunk painted with flowers holds decorative metal trays. A woven straw basket and a hanging hat evoke summer strolls. A jute rug softens the white hardwood floor.

The bedrooms

A romantic master bedroom

The master bedroom is located at the back of the house. It features the same palette of whites as the living area. A bed with a carved headboard, painted white, stands against the wainscoting. An antique Toile de Jouy has been framed and hung above the bed. French doors open onto a wooden deck and a few steps leading down to the garden.

The second bedroom and its walls of framed art

The second bedroom features a large window overlooking the garden. Here, the walls are covered with framed artwork. Black-and-white sketches, oriental miniatures, and retro illustrations come together to form a true personal gallery.

The bedding is typical of English country homes. An antique pine dresser adds the warmth of raw wood. Storage is concealed behind discreet louvered doors.

The entryway

The front door opens onto a bright central hall that leads to all the rooms. A double glass door leads to a sun-drenched vestibule, like a small winter garden. Geraniums, cyclamens, and green hydrangeas thrive there.

Striped linen Roman shades adorn the lattice windows. In the hall, a large antique mirror with a silver frame reflects the greenery. A painted wooden radiator cover serves as a console table for a few mementos. From the moment you arrive, the house exudes a sense of warmth.

The garden, with gravel, perennials, and wooden decks

Facing the street, a young orchard and beds of perennials create a cottage-style garden. At the back, the golden gravel is home to purple verbena, pale roses, and clumps of catmint. An urn on a pedestal, adorned with a fern, adds a classic touch to the center of the flower beds. Japanese-style wooden stepping stones guide the path through the plantings.

Several wooden decks, bordered by white cross-bar railings, stretch out one after another facing the sea. An open shelter, furnished with a lounge chair and a bench, provides shade on sunny days. The white picket fence encloses the garden and protects its flowerbeds from the sea breeze.

Our take on the decor

This house perfectly illustrates the art of warm white. An all-white interior could have seemed cold, but the owners have managed to make it welcoming. The vertical paneling adds depth and texture that plays with the light. Touches of blue, red, and green appear sparingly, like subtle accents. We also love the mix of vintage finds, artwork, and travel souvenirs.

Each room tells a story without ever feeling cluttered. The numerous windows bring the garden into the house. Its gravel garden, with its verbena, roses, and urn on a pedestal, extends this sense of poetry. The whole space exudes the simplicity and easygoing lifestyle of a seaside vacation home.

Fairlight, a village of cliffs and smugglers

The history of Fairlight, where this white seaside house is located, dates back at least to 1180, the year St. Andrew’s Church was built. In the 18th and 19th centuries, its dark cliffs and secluded valleys attracted smugglers. Goods were discreetly transported across the English Channel, sheltered by these rugged landscapes. This spectacular landscape has also inspired painters.

William Holman Hunt depicted it in 1852 in “Our English Coasts,” a famous Pre-Raphaelite painting. The painting shows Lover’s Seat, a romantic viewpoint perched above Covehurst Bay. The Royal Academy exhibited it the very next year. Today, the village exudes a peaceful atmosphere, nestled between lush countryside and a wild coastline.
