A 37sqm studio that feels like a two-room apartment

This 37sqm studio on the island of Kungsholmen in Stockholm combines old-world charm with contemporary design. Thanks to the installation of a white glass partition with slender mullions, an intimate sleeping area has been created within the living space. Beige linen curtains close off the alcove when night falls. It thus feels more like a small two-room apartment than a traditional studio.
The high ceilings and windows are typical of the era in which it was built. The original molded doors have been preserved in the entryway. Molding is still visible on the ceiling. The decor features a palette of beige tones, light wood, and soft, natural hues.
A bright and cozy living room
The living room features two large windows and a white-oiled oak herringbone parquet floor. The light-colored walls reflect the light, and the space is simply yet comfortably furnished. A beige sofa and two coffee tables provide seating for guests, complemented by a designer armchair that is almost hidden beneath a thick sheepskin rug.
Against the glass wall, a console table serves as a small bookshelf. It’s mainly used to display decorative items. A large potted ficus softens the corner of the room. In the bedroom area, near the window, you can see a chest of drawers with wicker-style fronts.
The kitchen, open to the living room
The kitchen opens wide onto the living room. A dining area is situated between these two spaces. The kitchen cabinets are Shaker-style in a greige shade. A double row of tall cabinets makes full use of the ceiling height. A small open niche provides a spot to display everyday objects. The countertop is quite spacious for a studio kitchen, and there is plenty of storage. Its refrigerator is located in the adjacent entrance, freeing up usable counter space.
The dining table is surrounded by four black bentwood bistro chairs with Thonet-style wicker seats. Two Vichy-print dish towels hang from hooks on the side of the table. This selection of furniture and accessories evokes the interior of a Parisian bistro.
The bedroom in the alcove behind the glass partition
The white glass partition isolates the alcove housing the bedroom area without disrupting the sense of space in the living room. Beige linen curtains slide open to preserve privacy at bedtime. The white walls and light herringbone-patterned hardwood floors extend the look of the living room. A taupe velvet-upholstered headboard adds a classic touch to this alcove.
Its shape and tufting are reminiscent of bedrooms in private mansions. From the bed, you can see into the living room through the windows, and it doesn’t feel cramped, at least not in a visual sense.
The simple, white bathroom
The bathroom features a shower area, a vanity unit, and a toilet. A folding glass partition encloses the shower space. The walls are covered with white tile featuring narrow grout lines, a timeless classic. On the floor, light beige tile with mineral-inspired hues provides contrast. The tall bamboo shelf offers very practical vertical storage.
You can store products in woven baskets to maximize usable storage space. A backlit round mirror visually enlarges the room.
The entrance hall and its storage solutions
The entrance hall features the original coat closet set into a niche. Brass coat hooks and a shoe rack make daily organization a breeze. This space also includes numerous closets and cabinets. One of the beautiful paneled doors even conceals a small walk-in closet.
Our take on the decor
We really love the gentle harmony of this decor. The color palette features neutral tones, enhanced by the beautiful natural light. These warm hues make the space appear larger. Natural textiles such as terry cloth, linen, velvet, and sheepskin complement each other perfectly. Oak was chosen for the nesting tables, the wicker chest of drawers, and the console table. This repetition creates a very harmonious visual unity.
The glass partition, the studio’s best idea
In our opinion, the glass partition is the best idea in this studio. It defines the sleeping area while allowing light from the windows to flow through. The linen curtains add a real sense of comfort in the evening. Its white posts blend into the walls and respect the spirit of the classic building. This style of glass partition is the best fit for this 37sqm historic studio. It’s hard to imagine an industrial-style black glass partition in this space. The nesting tables also seem like a very smart choice for a small living room. They adapt to every moment of the day. The mix of retro pieces, Swedish furniture, and vintage finds creates a very personal interior, even though it’s fairly neutral.
An inspiring space for our classic small apartments
This 37sqm studio will also appeal to fans of classic small apartments, whether in Paris or elsewhere in the world. Its glass roof is reminiscent of artists’ studios in our major cities. The herringbone parquet floor evokes the beautiful Haussmann-style buildings. The bentwood bistro chairs and Vichy-print dish towels transport us to a typical bistro.
A classic 1920s building
The building housing the studio dates back to the 1920s. It is typical of Swedish classicism, a sober and elegant style that left its mark on the capital. Its stucco facade features a warm yellow-ochre hue and very regular rows of windows. At the top, a recessed floor opens onto a terrace bordered by a classic balustrade.
The wooden glass front door features a geometric grid pattern and a carved rose window. This motif reappears in the glass panels of the entryway, which is clad in marble on both the floor and walls. Architects Waldemar Conradsson and Nils G. Kjellberg designed the building. The Stockholm City Museum classifies the building as one of great historical and artistic value.
Kungsholmen, a green island in the heart of Stockholm
Kungsholmen is an island in central Stockholm bordered by Lake Mälaren. Its streets are a mix of historic stone buildings, parks, and tree-lined avenues.
Nearby, Rålambshov Park is perfect for picnics and canoeing. Smedsudden Beach and the Norr Mälarstrand promenade run along the lake’s shores.
