Le cabinet d'architectes Mary Arnold-Forster a conçu An Cala, une maison en bois de mélèze brûlé située dans les Highlands écossais et donnant sur le Loch Nedd. Perchée sur un site rocheux, elle a la particularité de ne pas reposer sur une dalle afin d'avoir un impact minimum sur le terrain, mais être installée sur des piliers en béton. Sa structure est faite de modules en bois lamellé-croisé dont le format a été déterminé par la taille du camion qui pouvait atteindre le site sur une petite route à voie unique. Le plan de la maison d'une surface de 100m2 environ est divisé en trois modules : une pour le salon et la cuisine ouverte, un pour la chambre parentale et sa salle de bain, et un autre pour la seconde chambre et sa douche.
Le bois est omniprésent, à l'intérieur comme à l'extérieur, et apporte son aspect chaleureux indispensable à cette maison en bois de mélèze brûlé inspirée par la technique du Shou Sugi Ban, installée dans un pays beau mais rude où son architecture minimaliste fait corps avec son environnement. La décoration est simple, car la magnificence de la vue depuis la grande baie vitrée du salon est le véritable point focal de cette maison. Mary Arnold-Forster Architects have designed An Cala, a burnt larch timber house in the Scottish Highlands overlooking Loch Nedd. Perched on a rocky site, it is unique in that it does not rest on a slab to have minimal impact on the land, but is set on concrete pillars. Its structure is made of cross-laminated timber modules whose size was determined by the size of the truck that could reach the site on a small single-lane road. The plan of the house, with a surface area of approximately 100m2, is divided into three modules: one for the living room and open kitchen, one for the master bedroom and its bathroom, and another for the second bedroom and its shower.
Wood is omnipresent, both inside and outside, and brings its indispensable warmth to this house made of burnt larch wood inspired by the Shou Sugi Ban technique, set in a beautiful but harsh country where its minimalist architecture is at one with its environment. The decoration is simple, as the magnificence of the view from the large bay window in the living room is the real focal point of this house.
