C'est près des côtes anglaises dans le petit village balnéaire de Winchelsea Beach que nous découvrons The Shell House. C'est la maison de plage en bois très anglaise de la designer de mode Pearl Lowe. Elle a été construite dans les années 1940 par un soldat au retour de la seconde guerre mondiale, pour son épouse, une artiste. La maison doit son nom aux différentes installations de coquillages de cette dernière, illustrant divers thèmes du bord de mer, comme le pêcheur sur la façade avant.
C'est une maison typique du style rustique anglais, avec sa superbe cuisine deVOL et sa décoration qui mêle les vieux meubles aux tissus fleuris, aux lits en cuivre, et aux parquets usés et peints. Une cabane en bois dans le jardin a été construite pour les invités, et comporte deux chambres disposées autour d'une cuisine ouverte et un salon avec un poêle à bois. Une piscine chauffée a également été ajoutée dans le jardin, pour ceux qui trouvent que les eaux de la mer toute proche sont un peu trop fraîches.
We discovered The Shell House near the English coast in the small seaside village of Winchelsea Beach. This is fashion designer Pearl Lowe's very English wooden beach house. It was built in the 1940s by a soldier returning from the Second World War for his wife, an artist. The house owes its name to her various shell installations, illustrating various seaside themes, such as the fisherman on the front façade.
The house is typical of the English rustic style, with its superb deVOL kitchen and decor that mixes old furniture with floral fabrics, copper beds and worn, painted wooden floors. A wooden cabin in the garden has been built for guests, with two bedrooms arranged around an open-plan kitchen and a sitting room with a wood-burning stove. A heated swimming pool has also been added to the garden, for those who find the waters of the nearby sea a little too cool.
