A clever 20sqm studio that makes you forget its size
How to optimize a clever 20sqm studio apartment with a mezzanine using simple and effective choices that visually enlarge the space
Located in a former textile workshop, this clever 20sqm studio with a mezzanine embraces efficient simplicity. Every design choice prioritizes comfort and space optimization, creating a pleasant place to live day to day. Set in this historic building dating back to 1890, the space boasts a rich industrial history and a significant advantage: a 4-meter ceiling height. The goal of this renovation is simple yet ambitious: to create a soothing interior designed to accommodate a variety of long-term tenants.
The project’s lead designer, Elena Gavrilova chose a minimalist approach to reveal the studio’s potential. Its large arched window is the true star, framed by old bricks. The rest of the space is more understated to highlight it.
The main challenge lies beneath the mezzanine, where the ceiling height is limited to just 2.07 meters. This constraint creates a feeling of compressed space right from the entrance, accentuated by the imposing staircase. To address this, visual design became a central focus of the project. The furniture features shades similar to the walls, making it almost invisible. Mirrors also play a key role, particularly in the entryway and bathroom. The result: the spaces appear larger, without altering the existing structure.
The living area is furnished with a round table and a sleeper sofa, which is discreet and well-proportioned. Its kitchen follows the same logic, with essential, well-integrated appliances. Everything seems to be in its place. It’s easy to move around despite the limited space.
Upstairs, the 6sqm mezzanine in this clever 20sqm studio offers a more intimate atmosphere with a darker color palette. This contrast creates a natural separation between active moments and moments of rest. The lower level welcomes light and daily activities, while the upper level invites calm. Even the bathroom contributes to this balance, with a backlit mirror that creates a sense of spaciousness. Photo: Daria Myagkay
