Perched at the tip of the Pen Llŷn peninsula, this small, renovated 80sqm Welsh cottage, built in the 19th century and listed as a historic building, faces Bardsey Island. Bryn Canaid was restored with a specific goal in mind: to rethink the layout without taking away its old-world charm.

Stone, wood, white. Nothing else.

The exterior sets the tone. An exposed stone facade on one side, whitewashed on the other, with window frames painted in a grass-green shade verging on sage, a color that might have seemed inconsequential but which, here, becomes the signature of the entire house.

Inside, the floor is laid with stone slabs. Large. Irregular. The walls are white, the beams exposed, and the kitchen revolves around freestanding raw wood cabinets, no built-in cabinets, no continuous countertop. A deliberately bohemian and vintage approach that charms with its rustic look, a sort of “wabi-sabi” kitchen that celebrates the beauty of imperfect things.

The mezzanine that changes everything

The architectural stroke of genius is the traditional Welsh mezzanine, the croglofft, which floats above the living room. It is accessed via a miller’s staircase and supported by solid wood beams. Below, a wood-burning stove occupies the former fireplace. Spaciousness of the living area is surprising in this house, which appears so compact from the outside.

The art of not decorating

The home’s decorative scheme is all about restraint. Here, simplicity reigns supreme. No layering of materials, no accent walls, this is not an “Instagrammable” space. Color comes from outside, the sea, the fields, the island in the distance. The south-facing windows are wide, offering constant views of Bardsey. That’s enough to complement the neutral-toned decor; why do more?

Both bedrooms are carpeted with soft wool. A smart choice in a damp and windy climate: warmth underfoot, sound absorption, and a visual softness that contrasts nicely with the austere living areas. The owners of this house understood that with such a view, the best approach was to take a backseat when it came to interior design. And it’s a perfect choice.
