In Vinkeveen, south of Amsterdam, an interior designer and his father chose to build a tiny 60sqm house home designed by TINY VILLA. It’s nestled right on the water’s edge. The result? A masterclass in maximizing space despite the limited area, with plenty of light and a warm, contemporary decor. The land has been in the family for over half a century. An old trailer had been quietly aging there, surrounded by vacation memories and the changing Dutch seasons. Bowie Nijdam, an Amsterdam-based product designer, decided not to simply let it fall into disuse. Together with his father, he envisioned something else.

Architecture that plays with perception

The idea here was not to build a primary residence, but a place to escape to whenever the need for nature arose. This tiny 60sqm house, custom-designed, is rooted in family history, as it replaces the old caravan that had stood there for 50 years. The Dutch manufacturer TINY VILLA, which produces prefabricated modular wooden homes, was the inspiration for this family project.

60 square meters on paper doesn’t seem like much. Inside, the impression is quite different. The key lies in a single decision: the size of the windows. Large picture windows open generously onto the adjacent lake, visually connecting the interior to the exterior. The boundary between inside and outside dissolves.

Wood dominates the entire structure, both on the exterior and inside. Chosen for its warmth and durability, it gives the house a natural coherence that industrial finishes could never have achieved. Nothing ostentatious, just the grain of the wood, the light from the lake, and a simple, neutral contemporary decor that makes you feel at home immediately.

The interior layout reflects the designer’s priorities: since every room has a function, not a single centimeter is wasted. Kitchen, living room, and the bathroom were designed as a unified whole, conceived in relation to one another. The house features two separate bedrooms, a deliberate choice to allow multiple generations to gather while maintaining a degree of privacy.

The lakeshore: true luxury

This tiny 60sqm house is built directly on the shore of the Vinkeveense Plassen. And this location is the very reason for the project. Swimming after a busy day, taking the boat out in the morning, watching the water from the sofa, these are the things that inspired this project. The older members of the family find their garden just as it was before, but in a renewed setting. The younger ones rediscover their childhood, with a modern twist.
