This 58sqm apartment in Madrid makes you forget you’re in the city
Green walls and an indoor vertical garden: discover how a designer brought nature into a 58sqm apartment in Madrid Spain
Perched on the edge of the Pantano de San Juan, a tree-lined artificial lake near Madrid, this 58sqm apartment could have retained its original 1980s look. However, Alberto Torres, a renowned Madrid-based designer, completely reimagined the space around a simple idea: bringing nature indoors.
Every wall in this 58sqm apartment features the same shade of green. The design includes neither accent walls nor subtle touches, but covers every surface. This radical choice could have overwhelmed an already compact space. On the contrary, it creates visual continuity that makes each room feel larger. In this way, it blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior.
The palette extends from floor to ceiling in a monochromatic scheme. Its living room sofa features the same shade. The aged brass accents on the side tables provide the only warm contrast, just enough to prevent the look from becoming too uniform.
The project creates a green corner right in the living room. Two white leather poufs from Fatboy are placed in front of a wall covered in plants with green and orange leaves. Neon letters add a playful touch to this space designed by Alberto Torres with a chill-out vibe.
This corner isn’t just for decoration. It becomes a genuine space where people are happy to settle in. In the other rooms, botanical wallpapers take over. They provide the transition between the solid walls and the natural outdoor decor. Floral motifs, stylized foliage, and references to 19th-century botanical watercolors make up a carefully curated ensemble, evoking a country house reimagined in a contemporary style.
The moldings found in several rooms reinforce this connection to the past. They frame the wallpaper and define the space. In the kitchen, the design follows the same approach. It features a linear layout, cabinet fronts in the same shade of green, and vintage-style Peronda tiles with green and beige geometric patterns, creating a subtly vintage atmosphere.
The project opened up the original terrace to the living room by removing the interior doors and windows. This transformation integrates the view of the lake into the living space. The dining table, featuring a glass top, opens up the views in this narrow space. Thus, this 58sqm apartment becomes a green cabin by a lake, just twenty minutes from the Spanish capital.
