A minimalist house on the island of Andros with blue and white decor
Villa Riza is a minimalist house on the island of Andros, decorated in a Cycladic style and offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea
On the greenest of the Cyclades islands, this minimalist house on the island of Andros was built among fig trees and thousand-year-old olive trees. It is called Riza, which means “root” in Greek. Villa Riza was born from a family project: three sister houses spread across the same estate, at different elevations. It occupies the lower part of the property, closest to the stream and the citrus groves.
The facade blends into the rock. The local stone interacts with the whitewashed walls. This is not regional folklore, it is an authentic architectural response to a unique environment. The space is compact, 60 square meters, yet feels spacious and airy thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Aegean Sea.
You enter the living area, which opens wide onto the landscape. The sea is like a work of art, and there is no need for curtains or superfluous ornaments. Blue of the waves and the sky are the main decoration. The stone floor and light-colored walls create an atmosphere of monastic freshness.
The furniture is understated: a few low seats with clean lines, a stone fireplace. Nothing distracts the eye from the essentials. Its kitchen blends naturally into the living space, separated by the low wall against which the built-in sofa rests. The details are carefully crafted, ceramic handles, raw wood shelves, evoking local craftsmanship without falling into cliché.
The master bedroom is bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. Its colors harmonize with the landscape: pale ochre, off-white, mineral beige. The second bedroom surprises with its platform bed built into the masonry. Custom-made furniture, anchored in the very fabric of the building.
The bathrooms feature recycled marble sinks that contrast with the exterior stone. A traditional masonry shower offers a daily moment of refreshment in the Greek heat.
Villa Riza’s true living room measures 180 square meters. The terrace stretches across the entire width of the property. It features a large stone table and lounge chairs facing the infinity pool. In the distance, the Aegean Sea takes you on a journey without leaving your hammock. The garden, planted with fig trees, cacti, and citrus trees, completes this wild and beautiful natural scene.
Villa Riza runs on solar power. It collects rainwater. Its bioclimatic architecture is fully respectful of its environment.
