Burgundy stands out as a key color in interior design for fall-winter 2026-2027. And it is this deep shade that was chosen for this small 44sqm apartment. Designer Olga Mirzabaeva designed it for a couple who recently purchased it in a new building. This apartment has an unusual feature: it features a curved exterior wall, pierced by three large windows, that spans the entire living space.
Matte black, off-white, and soft beige balance out the burgundy in every room. Classic-style furniture is paired with pieces featuring more contemporary lines. Floral velvet, transparent chairs, and sculptural elements, such as the ceiling lamp, coexist in perfect harmony. Despite these differences, a sense of cohesion emerges, and this new apartment truly stands out from the ordinary. Each area retains its own identity while remaining connected to the others through the same color palette.
A living room built around a curved wall
The living room, which opens onto the kitchen and dining area, presents the project’s main challenge. Its exterior wall forms a pronounced curve and incorporates three aligned windows that flood the room with natural light. The designer placed a round table in the recess created by this curve. This choice complements the wall’s geometry, an excellent decision. This technical constraint is, in fact, the living room’s true highlight. A brown fabric sofa occupies the other side of the room, complemented by a black coffee table with clean lines.
Burgundy-colored open shelves display objects and books, directly echoing the color palette chosen for the entire apartment. Mismatched chairs, some with floral or transparent seats, including Philippe Starck’s famous “Ghost” chairs, surround the round table. A geometric chandelier hangs above the dining area and immediately catches the eye. The flooring varies in color depending on the area, with warm-toned hardwood in the living room and gray tile in the open kitchen area.
A black and beige kitchen accented with burgundy
The kitchen features two contrasting colors, black and beige, relatively neutral tones enhanced by the glossy burgundy backsplash. This adds a warm texture between the black and the light tones. Ceiling spotlights and built-in lighting beneath the upper cabinets highlight the countertop.
The gray flooring in front of the kitchen discreetly delineates this space from the living room. The storage combines deep drawers and closed cabinets to accommodate dishes and small appliances. Despite its small size, this well-designed kitchen allows for comfortable cooking.
A bedroom adorned with wallpaper
In the bedroom, a burgundy tufted bed and a large decorative wallpaper featuring cranes and branches are the room’s two standout features. It’s a small, deliberate touch of whimsy in this otherwise much more understated bedroom with its soft gray wallpaper. This magnificent burgundy wallpaper is thoughtfully placed on the wall behind the bed so that it isn’t too overwhelming when you go to sleep, thus preserving an atmosphere conducive to a good night’s rest.
Plenty of storage space has been created, a real asset in a small 44sqm apartment. Every nook and cranny of the room is equipped with storage to make the most of the available space. A small dressing table that doubles as a desk is set up in one corner of the bedroom.
A compact yet fully equipped bathroom
The bathroom features gray ceramic tiles from floor to ceiling. This choice of material visually unifies the entire small space. An asymmetrical, backlit mirror with rounded corners hangs above a wall-mounted vanity. This small room features the same type of storage units with beige fronts that were installed in the bedroom. They make the most of every available centimeter of vertical space.
The washing machine also fits into this room, a layout that frees the kitchen from a bulky appliance. In this room, neutral tones were deliberately chosen to maintain a serene atmosphere, allowing for complete relaxation.
A burgundy entryway sets the tone
The entryway features the burgundy shade on the walls and ceiling. It is predominantly painted in this color using the color-blocking technique. The white doors and trim create a sharp contrast with this deep hue and prevent any feeling of claustrophobia. A shallow shoe cabinet and wall-mounted storage with a mirror complete this transitional space between the exterior and interior.
Our take on this decor
In this small 44sqm apartment, the designer chose burgundy to unify the rooms and bring them plenty of warmth. It’s a classic color used here with a certain sense of balance so it doesn’t become tiresome. Its round table nestled into the curved wall cleverly takes advantage of an architectural constraint. The combination of black, burgundy, and beige found in the two-room units creates a cozy and elegant atmosphere. The mix of styles adds real richness to each space.
Inspiration to emulate
Burgundy holds a special place this year in the world of interior design, and it’s a color frequently seen in stores dedicated to interior design. You could say it’s the standout color of the year. You can incorporate it into your interiors, whether with subtle touches or bolder choices, by emulating the wallpaper in the bedroom of this small 44sqm apartment.
Alternatively, a burgundy velvet armchair or a dark bookshelf is all it takes to create a warm, on-trend atmosphere. But if that seems too bold, a simple lamp, a throw pillow on the sofa, or some tableware will be enough to bring this color into your home. This shade pairs easily with black, creating a striking contrast. To brighten the space, a beige like the one shown here, or off-white, would be an excellent choice for surfaces such as walls.
