Ce phénomène naturel se produit lorsque des particules solaires entrent en collision avec la magnétosphère (c'est moins poétique que le résultat, mais l'exacte vérité scientifique). Lorsque la magnétosphère déborde de son énergie en surplus, elle teint alors le ciel de fabuleuses couleurs qui sont une des merveilles offertes par la nature de notre mère la Terre.
