Près de King's road et de Chelsea, cette maison londonienne agrandie et ouverte sur la lumière a fait l'objet d'une rénovation menée par l'architecte Jo Cowen. Cette intervention a consisté en une rénovation complète de la maison et en l'ajout d'une extension arrière de deux étages revêtue de noir. Il est courant dans la capitale anglaise, étant donné le prix de l'immobilier, d'ajouter lorsque cela est possible, une extension à l'arrière d'une maison ancienne sans en changer la façade. On conserve ainsi l'aspect authentique et traditionnel de ces rues londoniennes, aux maisons alignées sagement.
La rue où la maison se trouve est bordée de grands platanes, et derrière la façade classique victorienne, on découvre tout d'abord une entrée classique qui mène à l'agrandissement en contrebas, très contemporain, qui s'ouvre sur un jardin de ville intime. L'architecte a créé dans cette extension, une véritable cuisine familiale, au sol en béton poli. La maison réunit le meilleur des époques, une plus classique, et une plus actuelle, pour devenir un lieu unique et moderne, tout en respectant ses origines.
Close to King's Road and Chelsea, this enlarged, light-filled London house has been renovated by architect Jo Cowen. The work involved a complete renovation of the house and the addition of a two-storey rear extension clad in black. It is common practice in the English capital, given the price of property, to add an extension to the rear of an old house whenever possible, without changing the facade. In this way, the authentic, traditional look of these London streets, with their houses neatly lined up, is preserved.
The street on which the house stands is surrounded by tall plane trees, and behind the classic Victorian façade is a classical entrance that leads to the very contemporary extension below, which opens onto an intimate town garden. In this extension, the architect has created a real family kitchen, with a polished concrete floor. The house brings together the best of two eras, one more classic and one more contemporary, to become a unique and modern place, while respecting its origins.
