Mini-Mod n°3 à Sea Ranch, une icône de l’architecture moderne californienne
Construite dans les années 60, cette maison illustre l’ambition moderne du domaine de Sea Ranch. Imaginée par Joseph Esherick, c'était une des maisons témoins du domaine. Elle a été pensée comme un habitat accessible, conçue pour des week-ends proches de la nature. Baptisée Mini-Mod n°3, elle proposait des volumes compacts, mais étonnamment confortables. Le projet est né également avec une collaboration avec George Homsey, figure clé du développement local. Selon Homsey, ce modèle représentait la version la plus aboutie des maisons économiques du site. Rapidement acquise par un membre fondateur de la communauté, la maison a traversé les décennies sans transformations lourdes. Là où d’autres Mini-Mod ont été agrandies, celle-ci a conservé son dessin initial.
Restée vide durant près de dix ans, la maison a ensuite connu une rénovation attentive. Chad DeWitt et James Cook ses nouveaux propriétaires ont repensé les 64m2. Les trois niveaux sont réunis grâce à un escalier. Des rangements intégrés rappellent l’esthétique mid-century, tout en libérant l’espace. Le mobilier et les œuvres respectent l’époque de construction. À l’extérieur, le bardage patiné et les terrasses intègrent la maison dans son paysage. Les graphismes rendent hommage à Barbara Solomon Stauffacher, créatrice de l’identité visuelle originelle. Implantée sous les séquoias géants, la maison se trouve non loin de la plage de Black Point.
Built in the 1960s, this house illustrates the modern ambition of the Sea Ranch estate. Designed by Joseph Esherick, it was one of the estate's show homes. It was conceived as an accessible dwelling, designed for weekends close to nature. Named Mini-Mod No. 3, it offered compact but surprisingly comfortable living spaces. The project was also born out of a collaboration with George Homsey, a key figure in local development. According to Homsey, this model represented the most successful version of the site's economical houses. Quickly acquired by a founding member of the community, the house has survived the decades without any major alterations. While other Mini-Mods have been enlarged, this one has retained its original design.
After standing empty for nearly ten years, the house underwent a careful renovation. Chad DeWitt and James Cook, its new owners, redesigned the 64m2 space. The three levels are connected by a staircase. Built-in storage reflects the mid-century aesthetic while freeing up space. The furniture and artwork are in keeping with the period of construction. Outside, the weathered cladding and terraces blend the house into its surroundings. The graphics pay homage to Barbara Solomon Stauffacher, creator of the original visual identity. Nestled beneath giant redwood trees, the house is located not far from Black Point Beach.
