De retour à Montréal après plusieurs années à l’étranger, une famille a confié sa maison datant du début du 20e siècle à Michael Godmer Studio. Le projet a dépassé rapidement la consultation initiale pour devenir une rénovation construite dans le temps, pensée pour la transmission familiale. Les propriétaires possédaient cette maison depuis quelques années avant leur retour définitif au Canada. Ils souhaitaient se rapprocher de la famille tout en offrant un cadre stable à leurs enfants. Le voyage avait laissé des traces visibles, notamment un goût marqué pour les cultures étrangères et la couleur. La rénovation de la maison familiale à Montréal devait donc prendre en compte leurs souvenirs.
Ce qui a commencé comme une réflexion ponctuelle est devenu un chantier long, mené sur près d’un an. Michael Godmer Studio a orchestré les échanges entre artisans, entrepreneurs et collaborateurs locaux. La maison est devienue un terrain d’expérimentation joyeux, loin de toute image standardisée. L’architecture existante, typique d’Outremont, a imposé un dialogue avec son histoire. Les boiseries, l’escalier central et les proportions généreuses ont été conservés. Les nouvelles interventions ont prolongé l’existant sans l’effacer. Les matières se sont superposées avec douceur, entre bois, pierre et peinture minérale. Returning to Montreal after several years abroad, a family entrusted their early 20th-century home to Michael Godmer Studio. The project quickly went beyond the initial consultation to become a renovation built over time, designed for family transmission. The family had owned this house for several years before their permanent return to Canada. They wanted to be closer to their family while providing a stable environment for their children. Their travels had left visible traces, notably a marked taste for foreign cultures and colour. The renovation of the family home in Montreal therefore had to take their memories into account.
What began as a one-off project became a long-term undertaking, lasting nearly a year. Michael Godmer Studio orchestrated the exchanges between local craftsmen, contractors and collaborators. This house became a joyful testing ground, far removed from any standardised image. Its existing architecture, typical of Outremont, imposed a dialogue with its history. Woodwork, central staircase and generous proportions were preserved. The new interventions extended the existing structure without erasing it. The materials were gently layered, combining wood, stone and mineral paint. Curves run through the project, from the kitchen to the bathrooms. Photo: Maxime Brouillet
