This tiny house on wheels, designed by Tanglewood Tiny Homes in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia, has all the makings of the ideal small home. It’s designed as a single-story structure with a fluid floor plan that makes it a comfortable place to live.

A clear design choice: wood everywhere

The tone is set from the moment you step inside. The walls, floor, and ceiling are clad in light wood , local pine and oak, in soft, slightly golden tones. This choice unifies the space and gives it a welcoming feel. The textiles follow the same theme: natural materials and neutral tones. A plant here, a textured cushion there. It’s undoubtedly minimalist yet warm.

Light, a precious asset in a small space

The builders have incorporated large picture windows and full-length sliding doors. Light floods in. The bedroom is particularly pleasant with its immense window that almost integrates the bed into nature. It must be delightful to wake up in such an environment. In the bathroom, a skylight provides pleasant overhead light. The space is small, yet this opening to the sky makes it feel larger. Green plants placed on the wooden ledge reinforce the feeling of being outdoors.

An aesthetic rooted in its surroundings

The exterior is in perfect harmony with the interior. Its white standing-seam metal siding, in a Scandinavian style, contrasts with the rough-hewn wooden gables. The gabled roof maximizes the height even though this tiny house isn’t particularly tall.

This ideal small home is designed to blend into a natural landscape. The large openings showcase the surroundings. Trees, the grass, the light filtering through the leaves, as captured by that poetic (and untranslatable) Japanese word “komorebi.” The interior design and the outdoor environment function as two sides of the same project.

Slow living as a design philosophy

What stands out is the lack of compromise between functionality and beauty. The living room features an L-shaped bench with hidden storage. Its kitchen offers an uncluttered countertop and open shelves rather than closed upper cabinets. The bedroom is simple, it is the window opening onto the trees that makes it beautiful.
