In the hills of West Hobart, just three minutes from downtown, a 19th-century Victorian house has been restored to its former glory. Lumière Lodge is tucked away behind a white facade adorned with openwork wooden latticework, typical of Tasmanian colonial architecture. Once through the black door, visitors discover an interior rich in color and antiques.

This three-bedroom, three-bathroom home invites you to slow down, cook with fresh local ingredients, and enjoy a secluded garden bathed in southern sunlight. Each space tells a different story, blending colonial heritage with contemporary sensibility.

A Victorian house saved from the ravages of time

The house dates back to the 1800s and retains much of its original architecture. The white wrought-iron veranda, the moldings, and the sash windows are typical of the West Hobart neighborhood, one of the city’s oldest.

Its owners have meticulously restored the building, preserving the solid wood floors, period fireplaces, and generous ceiling heights. Inside, each room features a palette of deep colors, ranging from sage green to plum and slate blue. This restoration respects the original floor plan and is furnished with carefully curated vintage pieces.

An English-style kitchen

The kitchen takes center stage in the home. It features sage green Shaker-style cabinetry with a marble countertop and brass handles. Next to the central island, painted in mustard yellow and black, are two wooden stools.

An arched window overlooks the sink and frames the lush greenery of the garden. A row of hooks holds cups and utensils. The small yellow bread bin evokes the spirit of an English country kitchen. Sliding glass doors open onto a stone-paved courtyard, perfect for summer meals.

A living room with a fireplace

The living room is comfortably furnished with a taupe sofa, striped armchairs, and a dark wood coffee table. It is centered around a wood-burning stove built into an old tiled fireplace. A gold-toned metal chandelier, adorned with flowers, hangs from the ceiling above the table.

An antique portrait in an oval frame hangs on the mantelpiece. This living area is a cozy spot designed for long winter evenings. After all, it can get cold in winter in this part of the world, where the seasons are reversed compared to ours.

Bedrooms decorated in deep hues

Three bedrooms are spread across the floors of the house. The first, paneled in a soothing almond green, pairs a gray linen bed with an antique dresser topped by a gilded mirror. The second, nestled in the attic, features powder-pink embossed wallpaper and a bed built into the sloping roof. It’s a sort of refuge suspended above the neighborhood’s rooftops.

The third bedroom, with a more masculine feel, features taupe and gray tones accented by a tartan throw. Each bedroom showcases antique finds, brass sconces, and washed-linen bedding. Accent furniture, such as dark wood dressers or inlaid nightstands, adds a vintage touch to these spaces designed for rest.

Bathrooms with the feel of a cabinet of curiosities

The bathrooms stand out for their bold use of color. One, painted pink from floor to ceiling, features a black freestanding bathtub. It is lit by a skylight. Another, paneled in forest-green wood, features a double marble sink topped with hanging round mirrors.

An inner courtyard as an extension of the home

The enclosed garden plays an essential role in the home’s experience. Tree ferns and an old wisteria frame the windows of the living room and kitchen. On sunny days, the stone courtyard serves as a private dining area, sheltered from prying eyes. This continuity between interior and exterior anchors the home in its natural surroundings.

Our take on the decor

Lumière Lodge charms with its cohesive color scheme and its rejection of minimalism. The owners have boldly chosen saturated colors, olive green, plum, and powder pink, yet the overall look remains balanced. Each room has a distinct atmosphere. The style is unified, however, thanks to the antique furniture and the use of fine materials such as brass, marble, and solid wood.

Gilded mirrors, antique wall sconces, and vintage paintings create the atmosphere of a family home passed down through several generations. We particularly appreciate the choice of warm lighting, candles, pleated fabric pendant lights, and lampshades, which bring a great deal of warmth to the home. The blend of 19th-century pieces and items gleaned from flea markets works exceptionally well, without feeling like a static collection. However, the presence of a stuffed animal in one of the bedrooms is somewhat regrettable.

An echo of French refinement

This Victorian home in Tasmania is located in a region explored by Bruni d’Entrecasteaux in 1792. This explorer gave his name to the channel that separates Bruny Island from the Tasmanian mainland. A few years later, Nicolas Baudin’s expedition, accompanied by French naturalists and botanists, mapped Recherche Bay, not far from there. This French heritage is also reflected in the decorative style of Lumière Lodge. The gold-leafed mirrors, ornate metal candlesticks, and dark wood antique furniture evoke the charm of Parisian flea markets.

West Hobart, between city and wilderness

West Hobart is one of the most sought-after historic neighborhoods in Tasmania’s capital. Its streets, lined with Victorian cottages, gently climb toward the foothills of Mount Wellington. It is visible from many of the neighborhood’s windows.
