In the village of Sagriès, just a few minutes from Uzès, a former artist’s studio has been transformed into a 100-square-meter beige apartment. This space once housed an artist, and its owner, photographer Marthe Hennink, has given it a new lease on life. She has preserved traces of the building’s industrial past, including its exposed concrete ceiling and massive columns. A striking section of limestone rock, reminiscent of a troglodyte house, adorns the living room.
Around this mineral centerpiece, the photographer has created a minimalist interior designed for two people. The result seamlessly blends the rustic charm of the Gard region with contemporary lines. This apartment exemplifies a renovation approach that respects the building’s history.
In the entryway, the owner has preserved the old sage-green wooden door in the Provençal style. This remnant of the original structure contrasts with the contemporary furniture arranged around it. A dark armchair adorned with a black-and-white graphic cushion welcomes visitors.
An open walk-in closet, finished in the same light-colored plaster as the other rooms, borders this small foyer. A round opaline glass pendant lamp casts a soft glow. This meticulous attention to detail is consistent with the rest of the apartment, where there is a constant interplay between the old stone and the contemporary furniture.
The layout is open-concept, with the living room, kitchen, and dining area all in the same space. In the living room, a massive limestone boulder appears to support the staircase leading to the rooftop terrace. A “Random” pendant light by Moooi, woven from white threads, hangs from the ceiling. A sofa and an armchair face each other on a natural jute rug. The sofa is upholstered in ecru linen, while the armchair features a black-and-white zebra print.
This graphic pattern injects character into an otherwise very understated and neutral space. A gray Carrara marble coffee table occupies the center of the room. Large windows let in beautiful light. Long white linen curtains gently filter this light. Houseplants add a touch of greenery that echoes the garden. Black-and-white photographs, simply framed, complete the decor.
The kitchen is located at one end of the main room. It is unobtrusive and practical. Two wall sconces illuminate the countertop. Opposite it, a round black table is surrounded by four Eames DSR chairs. Sheepskin throws cover each of these designer chairs.
This blend of furniture and natural materials creates a warm atmosphere. A banana plant in a large terracotta pot climbs almost to the ceiling. It stands near black-framed windows that open onto the terrace.
The bedroom is separated by a black metal sliding door, loft-style. Its frosted glass allows light from the living room to filter through. The bed, dressed in white linen, rests on a rug. The light-colored floor extends from the living room and entryway, visually unifying the home. Two black wall sconces frame the headboard, casting a soft glow perfect for evening reading.
A dark armchair and an open walk-in closet complete this space. The bathroom walls are covered in an ochre-colored plaster. It features a round black sink and a walk-in shower. The overall design plays on a warm color palette, making it very inviting.
Outside, a wooden terrace is sheltered beneath the branches of a century-old fig tree. An outdoor shower lets you rinse off in the shade of the foliage. It offers a refreshing break between swims at the nearby Gorges du Gardon. Its low, ecru-fabric sofa is perfect for relaxing outdoors.
A white marble table and black metal chairs make up the dining area. You can see the rooftop terrace planted with potted prickly pears. A pergola with reed screens protects this elevated space from the blazing sun. This level offers an unobstructed view of the olive-covered hills surrounding the village.
This beige apartment is a beautiful example of striking a balance between original features and contemporary touches. Rather than hiding the magnificent exposed rock or the concrete ceiling, the renovation showcases them as full-fledged decorative elements. It’s a design choice we particularly appreciate.
The building’s past becomes a decorative element. Off-white and beige serve as a backdrop for these raw materials. This neutral base maintains the brightness throughout the space. The zebra-print sofa and sheepskins provide contrast while staying within the understated color palette. This design choice carries through from one room to the next.
Its terrace, shaded by the fig tree, extends this serene and delicate atmosphere. The outdoor shower and the rooftop terrace invite you to enjoy the outdoors as soon as the warm weather arrives. This place is decidedly Mediterranean while remaining contemporary.
Sagriès is located in the heart of the Uzège, a region of scrubland, olive groves, and vineyards. This landscape surrounds the nearby town of Uzès, which boasts facades of pale stone and arched walkways.
