It took Lyan and Michel a while to find their first home. After years living in a downtown apartment, it was a large garden that finally convinced them to settle down in a charming country village. Once they became homeowners, however, they still didn’t feel at home. They asked the Dutch website VT Wonen to step in and reconcile their conflicting tastes. The site entrusted designer Fietje Bruijn with the task. How do you reconcile two opposing decor styles in the same home? Here’s the result!

The solutions to this problem

He was a fan of a certain minimalist style, while she dreamed of a warmer, almost romantic interior. After purchasing the first pieces of furniture for their new home, the couple realized they didn’t really like their choices.

This home is an interesting case because it touches on a real challenge of buying your first home: you invest so much energy in the search for the property that you’re exhausted by the time you get to decorating it. The garden was the deciding factor. The rest will have to wait. And then “the rest” remains in this temporary state for months, sometimes years.

The VT Wonen method is based on a few principles that can easily be applied without a film crew. First, identify what each person truly loves, not “what doesn’t bother me,” but what elicits a genuine positive reaction. Next, look for the points of connection between these two worlds. A neutral color palette can accommodate both clean lines and softer textures. Solid oak flooring works just as well with an industrial style as it does with a cozy Scandinavian style. Light, on the other hand, speaks to everyone.

Decorating lessons to remember

This kind of complete makeover makes you want to take a fresh look at your own home. Not necessarily to redo everything, but to ask yourself a few honest questions. Do I feel comfortable here? Do the rooms reflect who I am, or who we are as a couple? Is there a space that truly feels like me, or is everything in a sort of stylistic no man’s land?

The large size of the garden that drew Lyan and Michel to Voorschoten says something about their desires. A generous outdoor space promises a life that unfolds, outdoor meals, games, nature right outside the window. The interior should tell the same story. Not the opposite.

Rethinking the interior layout rather than filling it up

What stands out in Season 24 is that the vtwonen stylists aren’t trying to impress. No superfluous accessories piled up to create a “Pinterest” effect. Instead: clarify, declutter, choose a few pieces that really do the job. A well-placed armchair. A bold color on a wall. Curtains that drape beautifully. Simple, confident choices, and it changes everything.
